The launch of the Built Environment Carbon Database (BECD) demonstrated what can be achieved when the industry comes together to instigate change. Developed and funded by BCIS, the project was spearheaded by our CEO, James Fiske, who’s long-believed that data is the key to making a positive contribution to low carbon construction. His commitment to finding a way to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment was the catalyst for reaching out to colleagues and peers across the industry, who shared his vision of developing a collaborative tool. This experience has further deepened James’ knowledge on measuring and reporting whole life carbon and he is regularly asked for his expertise on the subject across the government and industry.’
Of course, BECD isn’t the only recent development in the carbon space. We now have the updated RICS whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) to help the industry reduce embodied carbon and operational carbon over the entire lifecycle of a building, as well as the pilot version of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (NZCBS) that provides guidance on what can be considered a net zero building. BCIS sends regular newsletters on all things carbon to promote the spirit of sharing information and knowledge across our industry.
The Carbon Newsletter contains news and insights from James, as well as bringing together commentary from other industry leaders, including those who were instrumental in the development of BECD, RICS WLCA and NZCBS.
It’s free to sign up and you don’t have to be a BCIS subscriber to receive it.
