Total maintenance expenditure in 2022 (at current prices) is estimated to be £86.1bn, representing 3.4% of all gross domestic product (GDP). At constant prices, this represents an increase of 7% on 2021.
These are the results of a special report commissioned by BCIS, which examined all available statistics to arrive at an estimate of the total expenditure on maintenance in the UK.
The objective of this report is to estimate the annual national expenditure on maintenance work on a consistent basis and to compare the results with the value of the stock of buildings and works to be maintained and the general level of national expenditure (GDP).
The report is an update of Economic significance of maintenance 2023 and follows as closely as possible the methodology used in the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), formerly the Department of Environment (DOE), report Building Maintenance – The Report of the Committee, published in 1972.
The full Economic significance of maintenance report 2024 is published in the BCIS Briefing section, as part of BCIS OpX.
The 2023 report, covering expenditure in 2021, is available to download as a white paper to illustrate its scope and coverage.
