BCIS Webinar – Construction: how will the election result impact the industry?

Published: 05/07/2024

The Labour manifesto promises several ‘first steps for change’ to kickstart economic growth, deliver economic stability and get Britain building again.

As BCIS has always said, the latter is inextricably linked to economic growth and stability. Labour’s proposals to establish the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) – with the aim of ensuring investments are part of a cohesive national strategy – is indeed encouraging. As is their pledge to focus on policies and strategic planning that will restore confidence and attract private investment. After a long period of uncertainty, there is a sense this change could herald the era of stability the sector’s been crying out for.

However, the new government will need a period of at least two or three months to adjust. And, given the significant economic challenges they face, their ambitions could soon prove to be unachievable and unrealistic. So, what does this mean for our industry? From the potential rise in construction costs to the impact on levels of demand, we explore the longer-term outlook for construction.
