Ask the experts: simplifying cost and carbon measurement and reporting in construction

Published: 12/02/2025

Accurate carbon measurement and reporting rely on three fundamental requirements: a consistent methodology, a reliable dataset to draw from, and a well-trained workforce to conduct assessments. These same principles apply to measuring and reporting construction costs, meaning quantity surveyors are uniquely positioned to integrate carbon assessments into their cost evaluations.

We have the methodology in the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) for the Built Environment standard, while the Built Environment Carbon Database serves as a central industry repository for carbon emissions data. However, there is still work to be done to ensure that professionals skilled in cost reporting have the necessary knowledge and tools to streamline the carbon estimation process just as effectively.

In this special webinar, our panel will address your questions on all things cost and carbon. Whether you’re looking to balance sustainability with budget constraints or navigate compliance with the RICS standard, our panel is looking forward to providing insights and practical guidance.

We’ll also share more about the combined cost and carbon tool we have been developing to enable cost experts to carry out carbon assessments too, BCIS Life Cycle Evaluator. From the use of archetype models to generate early-stage estimates, to choosing components from our extensive database, the panel will answer any questions you have about the measuring and reporting process.

Something you may find it beneficial to read before the webinar is our piece around the basics of carbon in construction.
