BCIS Webinar – Construction materials: balancing cost and carbon choices on projects

Published: 25/01/2024

From choosing the strongest, most durable materials to assessing the lifecycle of each asset and component, the decisions you make in the design phase of your project are crucial to its success. But how do you balance picking the most suitable materials for your project’s specific needs while also steering to design choices that stay within your budget? As professionals in the industry, it’s a question we’re often asked – how much will choosing lower carbon alternatives actually cost us?

Quality and consistency is key

Unfortunately, this isn’t the easiest question to answer. While the industry has a long history and established method for estimating and reporting costs, it is yet to find a unified method for estimating and reporting carbon values and costs together. As BCIS has highlighted over the years, the measuring and reporting of whole life carbon in the construction industry is rife with inconsistencies. The Built Environment Carbon Database (BECD) is aiming to address this issue through our continued work to analyse the quality of the data we’re capturing, to ensure consistency in how each asset is reported.

Our progress to better-informed decisions

But the industry has a way to go. However, while there is much work to be done, we’re beginning to make progress in overcoming this challenge. Find out what BCIS is developing to help improve the process of balancing cost and carbon choices in construction and to ensure better-informed decisions are easier.
